ON THE WING – Everything you want to know about the monarch butterfly will be on display from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservancy on Niagara Parkway in Niagara Falls, Ont.
Monarchs can be seen in every stage of their development, from feeding caterpillars to butterflies emerging from their cocoons. The program also includes a demonstration of scientific tagging of the monarchs as well as information about their amazing migration to Mexico. NATURAL SETTING – Thirty years ago this month, the village of South Dayton had a taste of Hollywood as it hosted a film shoot for “The Natural,” which starred Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close and Kim Basinger, as cameras recorded the vintage trains of the New York & Lake Erie Railroad.
To mark the anniversary, the New York & Lake Erie will offer a 20-mile round-trip train ride from Gowanda to South Dayton on Saturday and Sunday.
Locomotives pulling 1930s- era passenger cars will leave at 11 a.m. from the Gowanda depot, 50 Commercial St., and lay over for three hours in South Dayton, where anniversary festivities will include an antique car display, a model train exhibit, a Saturday baseball game, carnival rides and live music. Arrival back in Gowanda will be about 4 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for kids 3 to 11. To purchase tickets, call 597-4499.

LEASH ON LIFE – Save a Pet will benefit from the “A Mile for Jenni” Dog Walk Saturday in Chestnut Ridge Park, Orchard Park. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. at Shelter 8, with the walk beginning at 11. Donation is $20 for adults, $15 for kids; youngsters 5 and under are free. Lunch will be provided.
Registration forms are available at Best in Show, 5419 S. Abbott Road, Orchard Park, and on the A Mile for Jenni Facebook page. Donations of blankets, toys and dog food are welcome.

STRETCH THE SEASON – Summer isn’t over at Buffalo River Fest Park, 249 Ohio St., on the Buffalo River. The final Wednesday night concert takes place this week from 6:30 to 10:30, featuring the dance music, party favorites and classic rock of the Screaming Pineapples. Admission is free, lawn chairs and blankets are OK, but no coolers. Food and refreshment sales support park maintenance and other activities along the waterfront.
Come Saturday, Old First Ward historian Gene Overdorf will lead his final historic walking and shuttle tour of the river and the ward, starting at noon from nearby Mutual Waterfront Park, 41 Hamburg St.
At River Fest Park, the Valley Community Association will commemorate the Tewksburgy Incident with a program from 3 to 6 p.m. with exhibits, first-person accounts and performances of songs about the incident, in which a pair of lake freighters broke loose during a storm in January 1959, destroyed the Michigan Avenue Lift Bridge and jackknifed, damming the river and flooding 18 blocks of the Old First Ward.
