Despite cloudy skies, the only thing raining down on Labor Day parade watchers today was candy that marchers threw by the fistful.
Errant drops threatened imminent downpour throughout the morning, but that downpour failed to materialize, at least during the early afternoon as union groups, marching bands and Irish dancers made their way down Abbot Road in South Buffalo, beginning at the Buffalo Irish Center.
The rain held off long enough for the hundreds of union members to celebrate at a post-parade picnic with family and friends in Cazenovia Park.
At the parade, crowds were more sparse than in years past, perhaps due to the threat of rain, but a respectable number of umbrella-clutching attendees turned out.
“It ended up being a nice day,” said spectator Dennis White, of Buffalo.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown was in attendance, as was Democratic primary challenger Bernard A. Tolbert and several other politicians. Richard Lipsitz Jr., president of the Western New York Area Labor Federation, was the parade’s grand marshal. Roughly 75 different union chapters were represented at the parade.
