WASHINGTON – Sen. Charles E. Schumer continued his push Thursday for the conversion of the coal-fired NRG power plant in Dunkirk to natural gas, calling on the chairman of the State Public Service Commission to press for the change.

Schumer called the new PSC chairwoman, Aubrey Zibelman, on her third day on the job to say that the conversion – which requires agency approval – would offer cleaner energy and create hundreds of construction jobs.

“I called her to emphasize my belief that the repowering of the Dunkirk NRG plant should be at the top of the PSC’s ‘to-do’ list,” said Schumer.

NRG has said the Dunkirk plant is likely to shut down if the conversion to natural gas is not approved, and a closure would have a huge impact on tax revenues for Dunkirk and Chautauqua County.
