A 42-year-old Brant man, apparently emotionally distraught over a child custody dispute, surrendered without incident at about 7 a.m. Wednesday after an eight-hour siege at his home by state police, Erie County sheriff’s deputies and Seneca Nation marshals.
Shaun Humphrey, who had allegedly threatened to harm himself, came out to the porch of his residence at about 2:15 a.m. and fired several shots at police surrounding the house before he ran back inside, investigators said.
He was being held Wednesday night on charges of felony reckless endangerment, felony attempted assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a firearm and menacing.
Eden Town Justice Michael Cooper ordered him remanded to the Erie County Holding Center in lieu of $25,000 bail after his midmorning arraignment.
Humphrey faces further court proceedings in Eden at 6 p.m. Monday.
State police said the police agencies set up a perimeter around Humphrey’s residence at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, and state police crisis negotiators contacted him later.
The State Police Special Operations Response Team broke into Humphrey’s house at about 7 a.m., and he surrendered without further incident.
