A deer hunter put aside his shotgun late this morning to rescue an abandoned and injured puppy, according to Evans Police Chief Ernie Masullo.

The hunter informed police that while he was in a wooded area near Holland Road and Route 5, he heard a car door slam and looked out of the woods and spotted a small white automobile speeding away. Concerned, the hunter told police he walked out of the woods to investigate.

“He found a small puppy, apparently a Pug, that is 10 to 12 weeks old just standing on the side of the road. The puppy appeared to have an injured rear left leg,” Masullo said. “He brought the puppy to our police station, and we called our dog control officer.”

Mike Franey, the dog control officer, then took the puppy to a local veterinarian for medical attention.

Police are now trying to find out who would leave an injured puppy in the middle of nowhere to fend for itself, according to the chief.

“I just don’t understand why people do things like this. If they don’t want the animal, all they have to do is take it to a local SPCA,” Masullo said.

As for the condition of the puppy, the chief said, “It is still under observation” and more will be known sometime Friday.

Anyone with information on whom the puppy belongs to is asked to call Evans police at 549-3600.

“If they want to remain confidential, they can call our tip line at 217-3585,” the chief added.
