CASSADAGA – The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy’s enrollment is at 100 percent of capacity, and the center also claimed three awards this year at a national conference of job corps centers, officials said Thursday.
Referrals from the community have helped fill the slots for students at the center, director Ann Anderson told the quarterly meeting of the academy’s Community Relations Council held in the center’s cafeteria.
Students from Chautauqua County account for the second-largest regional percentage of students at the center, with the highest proportion coming from Erie County.
Anderson said the Cassadaga Jobs Corps Academy received three honors this year at the annual conference of Job Corps Centers held in Washington, D.C. She said the center won an award for having the most students completing programs with credentials. It also received an award for the best job retention among Job Corps Centers. The job retention award was based on students retaining a job at least six months after graduation. The center also received an award for data and record keeping. The last award was based on an audit completed at the center.
A new cafeteria is under construction at the center. Thayne Bodenmiller, director of administration, said the new building is expected to be opened in June of next year.
He said the cafeteria will provide state-of-the-art facilities for students and a place for a large meeting room. The current building used as a cafeteria will be remodeled for other uses.
Anderson said the construction of a new building is a positive sign that the federal Department of Labor sees a long future at the Cassadaga site.
The academy is starting a clothing closet. Winter items are especially needed for students who transfer to the center and do not have coats to wear to walk to classes. Anyone wishing to donate good used clothing should call Adam Dolce, business and community liaison.
Members of the council were entertained by a fashion show of hand knitted and crocheted items done by students. Knitting and crocheting are longstanding hobby clubs at the center.
The quarterly volunteer report also was submitted at the council meeting. A total of 158 volunteer hours were donated by students in the last quarter. Activities included a blood drive in October, volunteering to rake leaves for senior citizens in Cassadaga and clearing a municipal lot in Dunkirk. In addition, students are volunteering at the Chautauqua Adult Day Care Center.
