Falls man charged with attempted murder in domestic incident

LOCKPORT – A Niagara Falls man, who is currently on parole from a prison sentence in Ohio, was arraigned in State Supreme Court Monday on a charge of trying to kill a woman during a domestic incident on the night of Nov. 1-2.

Michael Hewitt, 37, of South Avenue, pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with attempted murder, second-degree assault, attempted second-degree assault, second-degree robbery and two counts of second-degree strangulation.

According to the indictment, Hewitt allegedly choked the Niagara Falls woman into unconsciousness, struck her with a sneaker and stole property from her.

Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. ordered Hewitt held without bail because of the reported parole situation, although there was no information on the charge in Ohio or whether he had been barred from leaving that state.

Assistant District Attorney John P. Granchelli said Hewitt had no local address, but Assistant Public Defender David E. Blackley said Hewitt had been living with cousins in the Falls,
