In recent months, Prish Moran, the owner of both Sweet_ness 7 cafés (220 Grant St., 883-1738 and 301 Parkside Ave., 834-1954,) has been busy reshaping her popular breakfast-all-day coffeehouses.
There’s a full liquor license on Grant Street now, and she’s working on menu items to go with the new beer and wine license at her Parkside location.
Meanwhile, loyal customers are helping the place evolve by suggesting innovations to the standard menu. Case in point: the “egg sandwich with pesto.”
Start with one of Sweet_ness 7’s house-made English muffins, positively riddled with nooks and crannies, split, toasted and buttered. “We bake them every day,” Moran said. “It’s way too big and crazy to be a true English muffin – more like a giant ciabatta roll.”
Add two scrambled eggs, tomatoes and sharp cheddar cheese. And, in a crowning touch inspired by customer requests: basil pesto.
The sandwich is $4.50, no upcharge for the pesto. You do have to ask the cook for it, though, she said.
“It’s not house-made, but it’s a fresh pesto, from Guercio’s, with pine nuts,” Moran said. The pesto flavor booster isn’t on the printed menu, but regulars have made it a standard request. “Then someone else sees it, then someone else has to get it. It’s pretty awesome, and that’s how it continues to this day.”
