STEEL TOWN TALES – Opening up the new year this week in the First Wednesday Speakers Series in the Steel Plant Museum of Western New York, 100 Lee St., off South Park Avenue, is Gerry Halligan, author of “Images of America: Lackawanna.” He will discuss the history of the City of Lackawanna and the influences of the steel industry on the area.

BUFFALO LORE – Authors are scheduled to visit Dog Ears Bookstore and Café, 688 Abbott Road, in South Buffalo, for a pair of book-signing sessions this weekend.
From 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, John H. Grandits will discuss his new novel, “Canalside Tale,” which centers on a detective solving a murder in 1880 in Buffalo’s lawless Canal District. Grandits, a graduate of Bishop Timon High School and Niagara University, is a former official with the U.S. departments of Treasury and Homeland Security.
At noon Sunday, the three authors of “Have Mercy” will sign copies of their book about their time at the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in the early 1960s. Sharing their stories will be Mary Herbst, of Grand Island; Maureen Ott, a former Kenmore resident now living in St. Catharines, Ont.; and Maureen Weber, a Niagara Falls native living in Lewiston. TO BEE OR NOT TO BEE – The Audubon Center & Sanctuary, 1600 Riverside Road off Route 62, Jamestown, will offer an introduction to the basics of beekeeping by Dennis and Laura Lamonica, who will talk about their experiences from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 18.
The program will lead into a beekeeping series planned by Cornell Cooperative Extension in the spring. The workshop is $16, $12 for Friends of the Audubon Center. Class size is limited. Reservations are needed by next Monday. Call 569-2345 or visit http://jamestownaudubon.org.

There is no charge to enter. Cash and other prizes will be awarded for best chili and other categories. Winners will be determined by the votes of tasters attending the cook-off. She will discuss Amish quilt culture, the Ten Quilt Code used by the Underground Railroad and other customs, and will display handmade quilts, handwoven rugs and wall hangings.
