SILVER CREEK –The 13th annual Polar Bear Swim will be held Sunday at the Firehouse on the Lake, 23 Jackson St., Silver Creek.

The event draws hundreds of swimmers and spectators. Prizes are awarded for the best costumes and most pledges earned for charities.

Last year, through the pledges brought in by swimmers and all those who supported the event, $17,000 was donated to four charities including Variety Kids (Women and Children’s Hospital), the Silver Creek Emergency Squad, Sunset Bay Fire Department and the Silver Creek Food Pantry.

Swimmers take a quick dip into Lake Erie promptly at 1 p.m.

Money is raised through pledges and donations.

Dunkirk native, Denise Wolnik, was honored this past year by Variety Kids Telethon. She was recognized for not only being a top swimmer raising pledges, but also for her year-long dedication in collecting donations and prizes for the event. Wolnik’s friends say that she begins her efforts the very next day after the annual swim.

There will be entertainment including “Rock ‘n Roll to the Rescue” DJ services and live music with “the Bone Shakers.” An auction, chili cook-off among local restaurants, wine tasting with Merritt Winery, a basket of cheer raffle and fantasy black jack will round out the non-swimming activities that begin at noon. Food and beverages will be available.

There is no admission fee but a donation of non-perishable food items, paper products, shampoo, soap, diapers and cleaning supplies will be collected for the Silver Creek Food Pantry.

For more information, to donate prior to the event, or for pledge sheets call (716) 934-3775. Inquire online by emailing pforge@verizon.net.
