Traffic was being re-routed this morning on Route 5 in Lackawanna as a result of some flooding under a railroad bridge near Smokes Creek.
Smokes Creek is definitely not the source of the flooding, according to Lackawanna Mayor Geoffrey Szymanski. He said water from the flooded area was tested this morning and it was found to contain chlorine, which means the collected water had been treated. There also is no evidence that the creek has been elevated.
Route 5, which is a state road, has been closed between Ridge Road in Lackawanna and Lake Road in Hamburg, according to Susan S. Surdej, public information officer with the state Department of Transportation.
“After a lot of investigation, the Erie County Water Authority thinks it may be one of their six-inch service tap lines,” Surdej said.
For now, the flooding appears to be confined to a bridge underpass in Woodlawn, which is affecting the passability of Route 5. Trucks and other larger motor vehicles seem to be able to make it through the flooded area, but it is not passable for most cars, which are being re-routed to Lake Avenue in Blasdell by Hamburg Police Department officers, according to Hamburg Police Chief Michael Williams.
The small railroad bridge under which the water has collected is located in a low-lying area.
