A Michigan Avenue man has admitted driving drunk April 16 on the sidewalk on the East Side with his 8-year-old grandson in the front seat.
Robert John, 58, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child. The plea came just before he was to go on trial before State Supreme Court Justice John L. Michalski.
He was originally charged with two counts of aggravated DWI with a child, endangering the welfare of a child, possession of alcohol in a vehicle and driving on the shoulder of the road.
Police arrested him after he drove on the sidewalk in the 1100 block of East Delavan Avenue about 9:20 p.m. April 16, according to prosecutors. He registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.22 percent, almost three times the state’s legal limit.
He faces a maximum prison term of one and one third for four years when sentenced April 10, according to Assistant District Attorney Christopher H. Gresham.
