An Amherst pedestrian was struck and killed on Niagara Falls Boulevard Wednesday morning, authorities reported.
The woman was crossing east to west at the intersection of Willowridge Road, when a southbound 2011 Chevy compact car struck her shortly after 5 a.m., according to Lt. Paul Yacono of the Town of Tonawanda Police Department.
“It is very preliminary information at this point, but she was crossing the roadway against a green light. She was wearing all dark clothing," Yacono said. ”It does not appear that there will be charges against the driver." The woman, whose name has not yet been released, had stepped into a 7-11 on the Amherst side of the boulevard and asked to make a phone call. She then made a couple of small purchases before leaving the store.
“This is really sad, My cashier told me that she was a regular customer here," said Sue DiMartino, the store manager.
As Town of Tonawanda police investigated the accident scene, the woman’s possessions, including a purse, a plastic bag and her shoes were in the street.
Brad Clelan, a tow truck driver and Tonawanda resident, said that stretch of the boulevard about a half mile north of the Youngmann is extremely hazardous for pedestrians.
“This is the second car I picked up in the last six months where a pedestrian was hit. The other accident was at Ellicott Creek and the boulevard,” he said.
