MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Legislature last week unanimously supported sending $150,000 to the communities along Lake Erie.

The funds will be divided equally among Westfield, Dunkirk and Sunset Bay for dredging projects in their harbors.  Chautauqua County Legislator George Borrello, R-Hanover, said he supports the funding because of the critical need to keep the harbors clear. Borrello has been lobbying to get enough funds to each of the communities so that they can take advantage of a dredging operation in Westfield.

The Westfield harbor at Barcelona will have its federal channel dredged by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in June.  The harbor qualified for the federal project because of damage from Super Storm Sandy in 2012.

The legislature also:

• Renamed the south county airport at Jamestown for former Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, and the Dunkirk airport for John Nalbone, the founder of the airport.

• Approved a three-year contract with the union representing the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Deputies. It includes a 2 percent pay raise each year.

• Approved a $65,000 grant for the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program to support tourism and economic development along the lake shore.
