OLEAN – Olean residents will have a chance to see what may be planned for areas of the northwestern part of the city at a design workshop set for March 12.

The city’s northwest quadrant has a history of industry and brownfields in need of cleanup, but new life may be around the corner.

At the workshop, set for 6 to 8 p.m. at the John J. Ash Community Building, the city’s consultant team will present the project, its history and a brief design, giving participants a hands-on opportunity to develop strategies for the neighborhood.

The area covered by the study is bounded by Homer Street to the north, Wayne Street and Constitution Avenue to the south, and a railroad on the east.

The process started in February 2013 with a final conditions report and market trends report.

Now it is hoped to establish a final business recruitment strategy, as well as a marketing and branding plan and public works facility plan, according to the project website.

It is hoped that a 3-D model will be ready by April, along with a draft study of the project. Those items will be presented during another public meeting, culminating with development of the projects in June if all goes as planned, officials said.

The process is being led by city officials with support from a steering committee made up of community members, state and local agency representatives and business owners.
