Aerial dance is finally coming in from the fringe. The demanding discipline, which began to gain traction in the 1970s and has remained largely outside the mainstream, was the central appeal of pop singer Pink’s recent performance at the Grammy Awards. Closer to home, aerial dance played a major role in Buffalo Laboratory Theatre’s production of “Cyrano” in the 710 Main Theatre last month.
Anyone curious about the physically challenging and potentially gasp-inducing art form can learn more about it during performance from Buffalo Aerial Dance at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the ALT Theatre (255 Great Arrow Ave.). Its new show, “Phenomenologia,” is inspired by scientific phenomena such as “electrical conduction, cellular communication,and astrophysics.”
The growing company is in the second year of its residence in the ALT Theatre, a small black box space in the cavernous Great Arrow Building. ALT co-founder Amy Taravella, an accomplished dancer and choreographer, will direct. Tickets are $15. Call 868-6847 or visit www.alttheatre.com.
