The record snowfall of Wednesday will give way to a roller coaster of temperatures over the next couple of days, with temperatures dropping to single digits, rising to the mid 40s and then dropping down again, the National Weather Service reported this morning.
The official snowfall at the weather station in Cheektowaga was 13.8 inches, although some communities such as Warsaw in Wyoming recorded 15 inches and others in northern Niagara County got a foot and half.
That breaks the old record for March 12 of 7.3 inches set in 1959. It also brings the total snowfall of the season to 120.6 inches, more than 20 inches above average,
We will get a brief respite from winter Friday but we’ll have to get through today with wind chills taking the temperature to near zero.
“Today is going to be cold, very cold, with temperatures getting into the mid-teens at the warmest part of the day. But with a brisk breeze, we’ll have a wind chill factor of zero,” said Bill Hibbert, meteorologist for the National Weather Service.
There is hope on the way. Temperatures will rise overnight and at day break Friday it will be in the upper 20s and maybe even 30.
The mercury is expected to rise to 40 degrees by noon and continue through the afternoon into the mid 40s.
Then, another cold spell is coming Saturday, with temperatures dropping back into the 30s.
That roller coaster in temperatures is good if you live near a creek, Hibbert explained.
“Because we won’t have a warm spell that long, it won’t allow snow runoff and melt to elevate the creeks," he said.
Another bright spot of the up and down temperatures, Hibbert pointed out, is that maple syrup production should benefit from the fluctuations in temperatures.
