Real property transfers in Erie County are going paperless.
County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz announced Friday that municipalities can now receive real property tax transfer reports and deed transactions from the county electronically.
“The electronic transfer of deeds and real property tax information is a good example of government working together and creating a contemporary system that saves taxpayers time, money, and resources,” Poloncarz said during a news conference in the Edward A. Rath County Office Building.
A pilot project in the Town of Newstead about a year ago proved successful. As a result, the county has made its new paperless system available to the rest of the county’s 25 towns and three cities, Poloncarz said. The new electronic system allows property transfers and deed transactions to be completed in real time.
“By working together in county government, we have now found a way to electronically transfer deeds to municipalities instead of mailing them in paper form,” County Clerk Christopher Jacobs said. “This will save time and money for both the county and local governments.”
About half of the towns in the county are already taking part in this new streamlined process, according to the two county officials.
The result has been a significant savings to taxpayers in printing, postage, paper, and storage costs, they said.
Municipalities currently participating in the new paperless process include the cities of Buffalo, Lackawanna, and Tonawanda, as well as the towns of Amherst, Boston, Colden, Concord, Grand Island, Hamburg, Holland, Newstead, Orchard Park, and Tonawanda.
