Kaleida Health is planning an expansion of Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital that includes a 10-bed neonatal intensive care unit, according to documents filed with the Town of Amherst’s Planning Department.
The hospital system plans three projects encompassing 33,940 square feet of new space, said Eric Gillert, the town’s planning director.
The one-story neonatal ICU will be built on top of an existing three-story building behind the main hospital building on the Maple Road campus.
A project that includes an expanded operating room and an angio center covers 12,692 square feet and will wrap around the southwest corner of the main hospital building.
And a one-story, 5,525-square-foot central sterile unit will be built in a courtyard area between the main building and the building housing the new neonatal ICU.
Kaleida spokesman Michael Hughes declined to provide further information on the projects, including the cost or the construction timeline, pending a meeting with community members set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Millard Fillmore Suburban’s ground- floor conference room.
The neonatal ICU project requires a height variance from the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals, and the site plan for the entire expansion must be approved by the town Planning Board. Kaleida’s request is on the agenda for the Planning Board’s June 20 meeting.
Also, Kaleida announced Friday that it has received from the state Health Department the certificate of need required to move forward on its plans for the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.
Kaleida is planning to move Women & Children’s Hospital from its longtime home in the Elmwood Village to a 12-story, $229 million structure on the grounds of the downtown Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, with a planned opening date of 2016.
Kaleida needed the state certificate to proceed with planning for the project. The Health Department’s approval was expected.
