Aspire of Western New York announced Thursday that the John R. Oishei Foundation has pledged $500,000 as a matching grant to help build Aspire’s new Center for Learning at 4635 Union Road, Cheektowaga.

Aspire has launched a $1.8 million capital campaign to renovate the former North Hill Elementary School, which the agency began leasing from Maryvale Central Schools in 1984. Aspire, formerly United Cerebral Palsy, bought the building in 2012.

The building will be updated and expanded by 20,000 square feet to provide wider hallways and more accessible classrooms for students needing mobility assistance. The project is expected to finished by September 2015.

The center offers occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy and vision, health and educational services for about 500 students with developmental disabilities from 28 Western New York school districts. About 125 students are full-time.
