Two high-level Buffalo school administrators were placed on leave Thursday, within 24 hours after they were criticized at a Board of Education meeting for not having proper New York State credentials.
School Superintendent Pamela C. Brown said late Thursday night: “It has come to our attention that there are two individuals whose certifications are in question. Until those questions are resolved, I, as the Superintendent, have determined that it is in the best interest of the District to place them in a leave status.”
She added: “This is not to be interpreted as a disciplinary action. It is an appropriate action for a school district to take in a situation such as this.”
The two have been identified as Yamilette Williams, chief of curriculum, assessment and instruction; and Faith Morrison Alexander, chief of school leadership.
School Board member Carl P. Paladino was quoted as saying earlier that the status of the two would be discussed at the next board meeting.
Williams has only a conditional certificate to serve as a school principal in New York State, not as a district-wide administrator, according to the state Education Department. Morrison Alexander has the same conditional certificate.
Both still need to take state exams for permanent certification. Williams and Alexander possess district leadership certification in other states.
Williams and Alexander were hired from out of state by Brown when Deputy Superintendent Mary E. Guinn was spearheading the district’s Central Office reorganization.
Williams, Alexander and Guinn all are connected with the Arizona-based Evans Newton educational firm, for which all three have worked as consultants.
