Help is on the way for pothole-plagued streets in the Town of Tonawanda.

The Town Board at its meeting Monday evening unanimously approved a low bid of $237,410 from Milton CAT for a blacktop-milling machine. Delivery is expected in three to four weeks. Officials already have designated 21 lane-miles for repair.

The board also agreed to buy five other vehicles – four heavy-duty trucks and a full-size sport utility vehicle for the town Paramedic Unit.

After a brief rezoning hearing, the board unanimously approved an application to expand the parking area at C. Mertz & Son Funeral Home, 911 Englewood Ave. The rezoning, which will turn an adjacent property at 145 Cortland Ave. from residential to general business, would allow Mertz to raze a house and garage.

Funeral home operator James K. Mertz told the board that the home, which he has owned since 1967, is vacant. Parking capacity would expand from 19 vehicles to 40. The project still needs site plan approval by the Planning Board, which would include landscaping and lighting.

“I think our biggest concern is so residents are not looking at the cars,” Councilman John A. Bargnesi Jr. said. “That would go a long way toward making the residents happy.”

The board also authorized the sale to Zaepfel Development, under the name Tonawanda Pirson LLC, of about 25-acres of town-owned vacant land in North Youngmann Commerce Center, 779 Two Mile Creek Road.

The site will be used for a new $17 million production and warehouse facility for Wythe Will Tzetzo Confections & Specialty Foods, whose parent company last month announced a name change to First Source LLC.

The board scheduled two hearings on applications for special-use permits at its next meeting at 7:30 p.m. April 7 – by H. Cope Enterprises, to establish a Bucks for Bottles bottle redemption operation at 1764 Sheridan Drive, and by Daniel’s Deals Collision Shop, to operate an auto body repair shop at 1685 Military Road.
