Buffalo Niagara is clinging on to a place on the top-50 list of the most populated metropolitan areas in the United States – but barely.

The two-county Buffalo area dropped one spot to 50th place, behind Salt Lake City, which catapulted above the Queen City to 48th place, followed by Birmingham, Ala., at 49th.

In Buffalo Niagara, 1.134 million residents were counted by the U.S. Census Bureau as of July 1, 2013, the most recent date for which figures were compiled – an increase of 348 over the previous year. There were 51 more births than deaths over the same 12-month period.

Population numbers were aided by 2,499 immigrants who came to live in the Buffalo area, outpacing the 1,937 people who moved away.

New York City continued as the largest metro, with a population of just under 20 million. The city also experienced a population increase not seen in decades as it continued to grow for a third consecutive year, with each borough showing gains.
