Honor Roll / Recognizing the accomplishments of Western New Yorkers

Russell Salvatore, owner of Salvatore’s Italian Gardens was presented the Red, White, and Blue Award by Erie County American Legion Commander Peter Hurd at the 95th Erie County American Legion Convention held June 1 at the George F. Lamm Post 622.

This award is given to community members and businesses that are patriotic and support our troops. Salvatore has a Veterans Memorial Wall in front of his Garden Place Hotel on Transit Road in Clarence, with statues of soldiers, firefighters, and a memorial to Sept. 11, 2001.

Five Western New York distinguished citizens were recognized May 30 at the 38th annual Boypower dinner, a major fundraiser for the Iroquois Council Boy Scouts of America.

Held in the forum at Genesee Community College, the council, with a membership of 4,000 in five counties, honored the following:

Genesee, Rick Mancuso, Mancuso Real Estate; Orleans, Jim Miles, Rosenkrans Pharmacy; Wyoming, Larry Rogers, Town of Pike supervisor; Livingston, Matt Cole, Commodity Resource Corp.; and Niagara, Dan Wilson, Niagara Fiberboard.

Sisters of Charity Hospital, both Main Street Campus and St. Joseph Campus, have been recognized for its commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care to stroke patients with the 2013 Get With The Guidelines–Quality Achievement awards from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

Roseanne Hemmitt from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association presented Peter U. Bergmann, Sisters Hospital President and CEO, along with Karen Koster, Sisters Hospital Stroke Coordinator, with an award for their achievements. The first presentation was held June 3 in the Sisters Hospital Lobby on Main Street with the second award ceremony held in the Emergency Room Lobby of St. Joseph Campus on Harlem Road on June 5.

The hospital received the Get With The Guidelines   Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award after achieving at least 12 consecutive months of 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Quality Achievement indicators and achieved at least 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Measures during that same period of time.

Get With The Guidelines is the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s hospital-based quality improvement program that empowers healthcare teams to save lives and reduce healthcare costs by helping hospitals follow evidence-based guidelines and recommendations.

D’Youville College Spartan softball and women’s basketball teams were honored with a Bronze Commendation at the May meeting of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference President’s Council and Administrative Management Council for their charitable efforts.

They were cited for their efforts in the American Cancer Society’s Western New York “Walk for the Cure.” Spartan softball raised more than $2,000 and women’s basketball collected $1,000 in conjunction with a five-kilometer walk held in September.

“This was our third year taking part in the Making Strides Walk and our team really takes pride in helping find a cure,” said Angie Churchill, softball head coach. “Every year we try to beat our goal raised from the year before and we really take this event as a great team bonding experience. This is a great event for Western New York and the American Cancer Society and we look forward to being a part of it every year.”

This was the D’Youville Women’s Basketball Program’s first walk under the direction of head coach Dan Glover. Student athletes, coaches, and staff of member institutions contributed more than 5,000 hours to helping others in both local and national activities in 2012-13.

Army Pfc. Michael S. Mooney has graduated from the Vehicle Operations and Recovery Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course at Fort Benning, Ga. The 32-hour course provided students with an academic understanding of the knowledge and skills used to plan and manage recovery operations.

Mooney is a track vehicle recovery specialist assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 81st Armor Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga. He has served in the military for eight months.

The private first class is a 2012 graduate of Batavia High School. He is the grandson of Mary Lyons of Batavia.

Director of the Year, Nick Bond, executive director, Delaware Family; Rookie of the Year, Margaret Giumentaro, program director, Delaware Branch; John D. Murray Award for Outstanding Achievement, Kyle Donaldson of Hamburg; Debbie Reeb of Tonawanda; and Geoffrey Falkner of Orchard Park.

The Western New York Chapter of The Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York elected the 2013-2014 officers and board of directors.

Elected officers are: president, Elizabeth B. Harned of Planned Parenthood of Western New York; president-elect and state director, Laura Linneball; treasurer and state director, Kara Addelman; and secretary, Molly Miranda.

Elected state directors are: Elizabeth Kraengel, Anne Joynt, and Jennifer Scharf. Elected as local directors are: Gretchen Gonzalez, Jessica Foscolo, Elizabeth Fox Solomon, Colleen Lamarre, Stephanie Mack, Tasha Moore, and Bethany Solek. Bridget M. O’Connell will serve as immediate past president.

Several military personnel have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Army Pvt. Garrett J. Putt is the son of Jeff Putt of Birmingham, Ala., and Tammy Snyder of Olean. He is a 2012 graduate of Portville Central School.

Army Spec. Jefferson Simmons is the son of James Simmons of Williamsville. He is a 2005 graduate of Williamsville South High School. He earned a master’s degree in 2011 from the University of Texas at Austin, Texas.

Army Spec. Dustin M. Schuld is the grandson of Richard Sullivan of Belfast. He is a 2007 graduate of Belfast Central School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2011 from St. Bonaventure University, Olean.
