Events for people with disabilities

Western New York Independent Living is hosting its inaugural open house from noon to 4 p.m. Friday at 3108 Main St. to demonstrate the range of assistive services and programs to help those with disabilities maintain their independence. Tours of the facility will be provided every 15 minutes beginning at noon. Visitors will learn how the agency works to empower, educate and create equality through household living skills, employment, transportation, counseling, benefits advisement, education advocacy, and family reimbursement. There will be a community fair and basket raffle. The building is accessible for individuals with disabilities. The Buffalo Agency Special Care Planning Team will host a free educational workshop, “Financial Strategies for Families with Special Needs,” at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday at 300 Corporate Parkway, Suite 110N, Amherst. Learn how to prepare for the financial well-being of special needs loved ones. Topics under discussion include housing, employment, special needs trusts, protecting assets and government benefits. National Alliance on Mental Illness in Buffalo and Erie County, an educational and support organization for families of the mentally ill, will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4007 Main St., Amherst. Beth Allen will present “Mindful Miracles and Unexpected Blessings – A Personal Story of Recovery.” For more information, call 226-6264.

The Stroke Support Group, a newly formed group sponsored by the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Kaleida Health for stroke survivors, caregivers, family members and friends, will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m. every second Thursday of the month at St. Jude’s Center, 760 Ellicott St. The group is designed to be a place for fun, support, education and to share ideas and resources in an open environment. Native American Community Services, 1005 Grant St., provides assistance to developmentally disabled individuals and their families in both Erie and Niagara counties through the Medicaid Services Coordination Program. Services can be provided to off-reservation Native Americans as well as other Western New York community members. For information, call 874-4460.

Cantalician Center Community Services, 665 Hertel Ave., provides employment, vocational training, evaluations, social programming and Medicaid service coordination for individuals with developmental disabilities. For information, call 874-0913.

Community Services for Developmentally Disabled offers an individual retirement experience program, a fun alternative to traditional senior services for people with disabilities over age 50. The small social group meets in community centers and senior centers in your neighborhood. Activities include trips, volunteering, parties, bingo, arts, crafts and more.
