Western New Yorkers shed their jackets and opened their windows Thursday afternoon as the thermometer officially hit 70 degrees for the first time this year, ushering in the first spring weekend that actually promises to feel like spring.
Although temperatures are supposed to top out in the mid 50s under sunny skies Friday, warmer air is forecast to return. Look for highs in the mid 60s on Saturday, when more sunshine is expected, and near 70 on Sunday and Monday, when there will be a chance of showers.
Each day is expected to be about 10 degrees cooler in Buffalo and along the shores of Lake Erie, which is still frozen.
The National Weather Service office in Cheektowaga registered Thursday’s 70-degree reading at 2:59 p.m. Record for the date is 82, set in 1945. The last time the temperature reached 70 was nearly six months ago – Oct. 12.
