SILVER CREEK – Town of Hanover officials have approved drawings for a new veterans monument park to be installed near Town Hall on Hanover Street.
Councilman Wayne Ashley, who is heading the committee for the project, Monday provided a drawing of monuments that will have emblems of the six branches of the U.S. military. The center monument will be dedicated to prisoners of war and those declared missing in action.
Ashley said that the committee has met twice and will continue to talk about fundraising efforts for the park. The land, which will be provided by the town, is located off of the south side of the parking lot at Town Hall.
Ashley said he has an active committee with many supporters who are interested in trying to have the park done by this fall. He said he already has donations of labor and some materials for the area.
A second public hearing for Mark Martin, of Angell Road, who is requesting a variance for a wind energy tower, will be held at 7:35 p.m. May 12. A variance was granted for a 132-foot tower, but Martin had to change his plans and now asks that a 135-foot tower be permitted.
Town Board members went on the record as unanimously opposed to a plan by the Chautauqua County Board of Elections to reduce the polling places in the town to two. Under the plan, the locations at Mount Carmel Church in Silver Creek and the Forestville Fire Hall would be retained. The Goodell Building in Irving and Silver Creek High School would be eliminated as general election polling sites.
A request to Jill Valvo, a part-time clerk in the Assessor’s Office, to attend a training session in Mayville was unanimously denied by the board.
The board approved the purchase of 101 dozen American flags for veterans’ graves throughout the township at a cost of $1,153 from Fredonia Hardware Store.
