WHEATFIELD – The Town Board this week voted to offer a $1,000 reward for information that would explain why the showers in the Youth Center locker room were left running for hours or perhaps days, doing thousands of dollars in damage.
“We don’t know if anybody did it on purpose, or if it was just a stupid mistake,” Supervisor Robert B. Cliffe said.
The board voted Monday to hire Swogier Construction for a $9,250 emergency repair contract for the locker room.
Councilman Larry L. Helwig said the town’s insurance carrier will pay all of the repair tab except for a $1,000 deductible.
Town Attorney Robert J. O’Toole said the insurer also will cover the reward, if one ever is paid out.
The water was left running on a weeknight last week, Cliffe said. It’s not known how long it was running; it’s possible that the water could have been on for a couple of days.
Cliffe said the steam from the continuous flow of hot water caused many of the tiles to fall off the walls. The supervisor said it’s possible the tile might have to be taken off completely, with the repair work going all the way down to the base drywall.
In other matters Monday, the board opened bids for the reconstruction of curbs on Craig Drive, and for the purchase of a new vehicle for the Building Inspection Department.
The apparent low bidder for the Craig Drive project was E&R General Construction of West Seneca at $92,400, outbidding four other contractors. Town Engineer Timothy Zuber said all the bidders will be checked in detail before a recommendation is made to the Town Board on who the lowest reponsible bidder is.
Building Inspector Michael Klock said his department would like either a 2014 Ford Escape or a Chevrolet Equinox. “Three guys who work out of the department are sharing one car,” Klock told the board.
Four car dealers submitted bids, with the apparent winner being Van Bortel Chevrolet of Macedon, which offered to sell the town an Equinox for $22,922.
The Rochester-area dealer came in lower than David Chevrolet, Ki-Po Chevrolet and the West-Herr group. The board decided to act on the vehicle bids later.
