Gail Mitchell, assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of New York, has been named to the Daemen College board of trustees. A former assistant attorney general for New York State, Mitchell has served in the U.S. attorney’s office for nearly 20 years. Before coming to Western New York, she was an assistant city solicitor in Philadelphia.
Mitchell is a member of the Erie County Bar Association and the Minority Bar Association of Western New York. She has served as a tutor and mentor in the bar association’s Lawyers for Learning Program since 1999, and held a similar role at the Buffalo Public School 6 (formerly Academic Challenge Center).
Currently, Mitchell is on the board of Roswell Park Cancer Institute and is a member of the Brown University Alumni Schools Committee. She also has served on the board sof the Elmwood Franklin School and Buffalo Prep.

The American Association of University Women Buffalo Branch has selected graduating seniors and valedictorians, Kelsey Jaynes from Starpoint High School and Samantha Maloy from Holland High School, as co-recipients of the 2014 Velma Cobb Scholarship Award.
AAUW Buffalo Program Vice President, Dr. Betty Krist, will present each senior with a $2,000 award during the annual meeting and luncheon scheduled on May 3. Jaynes is planning to attend Cornell University this fall to study biological sciences. Maloy will also attend Cornell University where she plans to study animal science.

Erie County Legislature Chairman John J. Mills has been honored by the board of the New York Water Environment Association with its Frank E. Van Lare Award for Mills’ efforts to protect and preserve the region’s water resources.
Mills, R-Orchard Park, was honored by the group at its 86th annual meeting and awards luncheon in New York City. Mills was unable to attend the event, so NYWEA Vice President Joseph Fiegl presented the award to him during the Greater Buffalo Water Environmental Conference held at the Adam’s Mark Hotel.
Mills has served as chairman of the Erie County Southtowns Sewage Treatment Agency and Erie County Sewer District No. 3, and Chairman of the Erie County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Recently, he developed the concept of the Lake Erie Watershed Protection Alliance, which started as a grassroots effort among municipal officials who wanted to work together toward the benefit of the area’s waterways. Under his leadership, the group has grown into a multi-county organization that includes stakeholders from Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Erie counties committed to addressing water quality issues affecting the New York portion of the Lake Erie watershed and its 84 miles of shoreline.

The Medical Society of the State of New York re-elected Dr. Thomas J. Madejski as assistant treasurer at its 208th annual House of Delegates meeting this month in Tarrytown .
Madejski is director of cardiac services and an attending physician at Medina Memorial Hospital. He serves on the hospital’s medical quality assurance committee. He is also a clinical instructor in medicine and pharmacy at University at Buffalo, and a medical director of Orleans County Nursing Home, Absolut Care of Gasport Nursing Facility and the Hospice of Orleans County.

The Advertising Club of Buffalo recently recognized four communications students as part of its annual Don Nichols Scholarship competition. Jessica Puskar, Lucy Norton, Ali Casarsa and Grace Gruarin, all students at Villa Maria College, took home honors.
The Don Nichols Scholarship competition, now in its 16th year, awards promising communications students a little financial help for their education. This year’s theme was “21st Century Icons.”
Puskar’s work featured Malala Yousafzai and was awarded first place. Norton’s work featured Kate Middleton and won second place. Ali Casarsa’s work featured Tobias Frere-Jones and took home third place. The three students were awarded scholarships. The work of Grace Gruarin featured Joshua Fields Millburn and was awarded honorable mention.

Three instructional staff members from the Buffalo Public Schools’ Adult Education Division – James Cooper III, Elizabeth Badger and Mary Suchy – have been honored for their service to the community.
Cooper, adult education division assessment and advisement instructor, received the 2014 Community Leader Award in the arts and culture category from the National Federation for Just Communities. Outside of his work with the Buffalo School District, Cooper is a visual artist. A large-scale mural he painted was installed last summer on the grounds of the medical campus.
Badger, an instructor at the division’s Buffalo School of Cosmetology, and Suchy, an instructor in the medical office assistant program received a 2013 Touchdown for Teachers award from the Buffalo Bills and M&T Bank.
Badger owns a full-service salon and is director of education for her church, Bethesda World Harvest International Church.
Suchy, who has been teaching in the division since 2001, was honored for outstanding service to her medical office assistant program students. Suchy stays in contact with many of her graduates, tracking their employment and often learns about their efforts to add credentials in order to progress in the health care field.

Daniel Hyatt, a Tonawanda High School student, received the Western Region Youth Advocate of the Year Award from Reality Check of New York State by Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition. The award recognizes his outstanding work in taking the lead in holding tobacco companies accountable for marketing to youth. Youth who participate in the Reality Check program protect their peers and their communities from the dangers of tobacco use through public education efforts, peer-to-peer training and outreach to policymakers.
Daniel also was recognized with a State Assembly proclamation from the 145th Assembly District. Reality Check Youth Action Programs educate and train teens to become leaders in their communities and to communicate their perspective on tobacco marketing.

The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, a national alliance of educator preparation programs, selected St. Bonaventure as an example of a program that has demonstrated a positive impact on teacher candidates.
St. Bonaventure embraces a clinically apprenticeship model for teacher preparation, where the programs exceed the minimums for field experiences, students finish programs classroom ready, and links with local public schools provide an incubator for collaboration and cooperation in the training of teachers.
