Niagara Honor Roll / Recognizing the accomplishments of Western New Yorkers

Niagara University accounting professor Ian Burt has won a pair of $10,000 awards, the university announced.

A doctoral dissertation he wrote earned a cash prize from the Institute of Internal Auditors Research Foundation. He also won the Keith Boocock Doctoral Scholarship, presented by the Canadian Public Accountability Board.

The winning dissertation was called “The Effect of the Internal Auditor’s Dual Identities on the Ability to Identify and Assess Internal Control Weaknesses.”

Shannon J. Hodges, an associate professor of counseling at Niagara University, has been named chairman of the American Counseling Association’s international committee for a three-year term starting July 1.

He is a longtime member of the ACA, the American Mental Health Counselors Association and several affiliates. He was the keynote speaker at this month’s New York Mental Health Counselors Association conference in Albany.

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center honored its volunteers for their service and commitment at a luncheon at the Four Points by Sheraton.

Don Roulley was cited for volunteering more than 1,000 hours. Recognized for more than 500 hours of service were Joe Currie, Diane Glynn, Pat Lenhart, Bob McInnis, Craig Moriarty, Peggy Shenk, Alice Snyder, John Zipp and the late Bill Everest.

Special recognition also was given to volunteers who served 25 years or more. Peggy Addoms topped the list with 56 years of service, followed by Marion Baker, Ida Garrison, Alanna Wustrack, Mary Norton, Alice Avdoian, Anne Hesson, Anna Martha, Bertha Frank, Danny Giancola, Betty Augustyn, Jane Schroeder, Peggy Shenk and Ida Mayflower.

In 2013, more than 300 volunteers ranging in age from teens to nonagenarians gave a combined 38,250 hours of service in departments throughout the medical center, Heart Center of Niagara, Schoellkopf Health Center and at various satellite locations. Front desk volunteers greeted some 48,000 visitors and patients. Volunteer drivers transported 4,861 riders in Memorial’s CARExpress vans.

Laura M. DeBacco, a physician assistant, has joined the OB/GYN Center at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center as its full-time coordinator effective April 14.

In her new position, she will direct operations at the center and provide outpatient obstetric and gynecologic care for the center’s patients. DeBacco will also assist OB/GYN physicians during surgical procedures and provide pre- and postpartum and pre- and postoperative care to Memorial Medical Center patients.

A Niagara Falls native and Niagara University graduate, DeBacco holds a master of science degree in physician’s assistant studies from Daemen College, where she is an adjunct professor and clinical preceptor.

She previously provided obstetric and gynecologic care as a physician’s assistant at Mount St. Mary’s Neighborhood Health Center, Niagara Falls, and most recently at Women’s Medicine of Niagara in Lewiston.

DeBacco holds certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She is also certified in the use of the daVinci Robotic Surgical System. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, New York State Society of Physician Assistants and Western New York Physician Assistant Association.

The Niagara Tourism & Convention Corporation appointed Anthony Brindisi, Michael Fiore, Kevin Schuler and Henry Sloma to the organization’s board of directors. Each will serve a three-year term.

“Our board is made up of tourism and business professionals with a wealth of knowledge and experience working in Niagara County,” said Frank Strangio, chairman of the NTCC board of directors. “With the addition of Anthony, Michael, Kevin and Henry, we are committed to continuing to work together to make Niagara USA an up-close and powerful destination for visitors from around the world.”

Brindisi is owner of the Keller Insurance Group on Pine Avenue in Niagara Falls, with additional offices in Lewiston and Lockport.

Currently the owner of the Village Bake Shoppe in Lewiston, Fiore previously worked in premier and international banking at HSBC Bank USA.

Schuler serves as senior vice president for corporate communications at LPCiminelli. He is directly responsible for overseeing the company’s marketing, public affairs and corporate messaging.

Appointed to represent the Niagara County Legislature, Sloma is a commissioner and vice chairman of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. He also serves as chairman of the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency.

Two local residents have graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio.

Air Force Reserve Airman Anthony A. Lockard is the grandson of AnnaMarie Lockard and nephew of Roseanne Lockard, both of North Tonawanda. He is a 2013 graduate of North Tonawanda High School.

Air Force Airman Chelsea A. Rajczak is the daughter of Randy W. Smith and Tina L. Rajczak, both of Niagara Falls. She is a 2013 graduate of Niagara Falls High School.

Both completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
