The Lackawanna Common Council Monday night greenlighted the purchase of three new police vehicles. The cars will be purchased with federal forfeiture funds at no additional cost to the city.
Councilwoman Annette Iafallo questioned city attorney Antonio Savaglio on whether the funds could be used for other purchases that would benefit the community.
“We can use the funds to purchase items necessary for law enforcement. We could not use them to pay salaries because of the nature of the forfeiture itself,” said Savaglio.
Forfeiture funds are monies or property seized and/or recovered during the course of a criminal investigation by authorities and distributed through the U.S. Department of Justice.
