The Town of Amherst may be in the market for a purchasing director, if some of its neighbors want to share the position.
Amherst is throwing out the idea to the towns of Cheektowaga, Tonawanda and Clarence, in hopes it may result in some cost savings for the municipalities.
“I would be agreeable to it if we can get additional expertise for one day a week at minimal cost,” said Amherst Supervisor Barry A. Weinstein.
Most towns do not have a purchasing director because the volume of their purchases does not justify the expense of the position. Weinstein, for example, has been serving as the town’s interim purchasing director at no additional pay.
But sharing a purchasing director might be worth it, resulting in larger bulk bids that could end up saving money for the towns.
The idea was raised by the firm Drescher & Malecki, which serves as the private auditor for a number of municipalities.
The firm indicated Cheektowaga and the Town of Tonawanda may be interested. Weinstein also reached out to the Town of Clarence.
“The next step now would be to determine what those savings could be,” Thomas P. Malecki, a partner in the firm, told the Amherst Town Board this week. “It’s very preliminary, but it’s an option worth pursuing.”
