FREDONIA – Members of the Fredonia State College Council met Wednesday in the president’s office to hear a review of the past year and plans for the next.
The council was told that recruitment for the 2014-15 year is on target. As of May 1, there were 1,003 freshmen deposits recorded. New students will continue to be accepted over the next few months with a goal of enrolling 180 more new students.
The college continues to recruit international students and has an agreement with a university in Korea. The college currently has 180 international students. Attracting more international students to promote diversity is a goal of the college, according to Frank Pagano, president of the council.
The new townhouses on campus will house 200 students in shared apartment-like settings. The cost is $4,400 per semester, including Internet, cable and other services.
There will also be a new $60 million science building in the fall, housing classrooms, laboratories and a greenhouse. The graduating seniors will donate dinosaur models for the lobby area of the new building.
College President Virginia Horvath said she has asked each department to look at budgets and try to reduce spending by $1.5 million. She stressed it is important to retain and recruit students.
Horvath also said she wanted to, “break the habit of adding without cutting,” in the next year’s budget. She said she will be looking at class sizes and faculty and staff workloads as ways to economize.
Construction will begin next week on the $36 million, 53,700-square-foot addition to the Rockefeller Arts Center. Commencement exercises will be held Saturday.
