LEWISTON – The topsy-turvy world of Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter and, of course, Alice are being presented in the Lewiston Council on the Arts’ “Alice in Wonderland” event June 1 in the Seneca “Bug” Park, next to Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St. Tickets are $10.
Activities, which begin at 12:30 p.m., include hat-making, games, stories, face-painting and, naturally, a Mad Hatter’s tea party. The rain location will be in the Historic Opera Hall, 732 Center St.
Toronto’s acclaimed Motus O Dance Theatre will be featured at 2 p.m., performing “Alice,” a high-energy dance featuring the otherworldly characters found “through the looking glass” that makes modern dance understandable and fun for both children and adults.
The audience also will meet real-live characters from Lewis Carroll’s beloved story, including the Queen of Hearts, who will be sure to suggest that all problems can be solved by the simple action of “off with their heads,” as well as the nervous and always late White Rabbit, the perpetually confused Alice and other favorites.
Treats will include cookies donated by Lewiston’s DiCamillo Bakery, Mangia Cafe and the Village Bake Shoppe, and chocolates from Kelly’s Country Store.
Children are invited to dress as their favorite characters, and photos are encouraged.
In preparation for the event, a free screening of Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” will be shown at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the library, 305 S. Eighth St. The library will be displaying the Alice in Wonderland collection of Dr. Wendy Duignan and June Crawford.
Tickets must be purchased in advance and are available on a limited basis at the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce, 895 Center St.; DiCamillo’s Bakery, 535 Center St.; and Lewiston Council on the Arts, 475 Ridge St.
“Alice in Wonderland” is sponsored by the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission and Modern Corp. Funding also is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts and the State Legislature, administered by Arts Services Initiative of Western New York.
