LOCKPORT – The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office has installed a site for the public to drop off unwanted or expired medications, the county announced.

The location is just inside the public entrance to the County Jail, and will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Dawn M. Timm, the county’s interim refuse district director, said that other drop-off boxes are to be installed soon at the Niagara Falls and Lewiston police departments. The Lockport Police Department has had such a bin for several months.

The drugs are to be taken to the Covanta incinerator in Niagara Falls to be burned, Timm said.

“Medications should never be flushed or poured down a drain because they can make their way into our water supply and impact water ecology. We’re trying to prevent that,” Timm said.
