ART IN ABUNDANCE – More talent than ever is on display at the fourth annual Glen Park Art Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Williamsville’s Glen Park. In addition to booths featuring more than 65 fine artists and craftsmen, there will be a Student Fest showing artwork from Amherst schools.
Music and entertainment also will be offered throughout both days on the large stage. And let’s not overlook culinary talent. Chefs from leading village restaurants will be preparing their specialties, which can be enjoyed in a shady new picnic grotto.

BALKAN DELIGHTS – You won’t need to visit Wrigley Field in Chicago to enjoy cevaps this weekend. The Serbian minced meat dish, also known as cevapi and cevapcici, will be one of the attractions at the annual Serbian Festival at St. Stephen Serbian Orthodox Church, 177 Weber Road at Abbott Road, Lackawanna.
In addition to the cevaps, there will be plenty of Serbian food – sarmas, sausages and homemade bean soup – and more than 60 varieties of homemade pastries, as well as music for dancing, church tours and ethnic gift notions. Hours are noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

HANDED DOWN – The latest installment in a five-generation tradition takes place Sunday when cousins Kathleen Metzger, seven months old, daughter of Lindsey and Jacob Metzger of Lake View, and Claire Diane Mills, three months old, daughter of Julie and Kevin Mills of Hamburg, are baptized in Hamburg Presbyterian Church.
Natalie’s christening gown and Claire’s slip have been worn by each generation in the family going back to their maternal great-great-grandparents, Laverne Deboth Gibson in 1898 and Thompson Reid Gibson in 1892.

CENTURY MARK – Amherst’s newest centenarian, Ruth Thornton, celebrated her 100th birthday Wednesday with a party in Emeritus at Bassett Park Manor, 111 St. Gregory Court. It included a proclamation by Amherst Town Council Member Mark Manna and the release of 100 red and pink balloons.
Born in Bradford, Pa., she moved to Kenmore with her late husband, Richard, after World War II and worked as a sales clerk at AM&A’s department store from 1956 to 1978.
In retirement, she and her husband managed the locker rooms at the Delaware Pool. The mother of two, she has seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She attributes her long life to being close to her family, going to church and working hard.
