Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs and County Executive Mark Poloncarz warned property owners Monday to be wary of people offering to sell a “Certified Copy of Your Deed” at highly inflated prices.

The company issuing such notices is overcharging homeowners for this service by as much as 1,000 percent, Poloncarz and Jacobs stated at a newspress conference.

A certified copy of any Erie County property deed is available from the County Clerk’s Office during regular business hours, Jacobs said.

County officials said the solicitation looks like an official government notice, contains public information about the property and instructs the property owner to include payment of $69.50 or more.

And people may pay an additional $20 for a second certified copy.

Instead, property owners may obtain a certified copy for $5 to $10 by contacting the County Clerk’s Office directly, at Erie County Clerk’s Office, Old County Hall, 92 Franklin St., Buffalo, NY 14202 or www.erie.gov/clerk/deedrequest/.
