Final figures are in on what turned out to be the largest food drive in the history of Western New York.
More than 300,000 pounds of food – 305,978 to be exact – were collected during the 11-day-long Erie County Fair earlier this month.
“The overwhelming support we saw from attendees of the Erie County Fair this year just solidifies how this community has truly earned the tag line, ‘the city of good neighbors,’” said Justin Guerin of the Food Bank of Western New York.
Actual donations of canned goods and non-perishable food totaled 85,632 pounds, and the $31,478 in cash donations was converted to 220,346 pounds of food.
The fair launched the Food from the Fair Feeds WNY campaign with several incentives, including free admission with a can of food on the opening day of the fair and $5 off admission or rides on two other days. Food was collected throughout the fair.
“The generosity that was displayed over the duration of the fair will help to feed the 34,000-plus families who rely on the Food Bank of Western New York every month,” said Guerin, who also thanked donors, vendors and sponsors.
