The Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts, the Elmwood Village’s crunchier, funkier and more localist answer to the larger Allentown Art Festival, will turn a three-block stretch of the city into a bastion of Buffalo-based arts and culture Saturday and Sunday.
The 14th version of the fest, considered the symbolic closing parenthesis to Buffalo’s busy festival season, will feature work by more than 170 local artists and craftspeople displaying their wares in booths lining Elmwood Avenue. From its inception, this environmentally conscious festival has been performance-focused and will feature more than 50 live performances throughout the weekend. The schedule includes a who’s who of Buffalo’s working bands and singer-songwriters on three stages.
Part of the Elmwood Festival’s mission has been to provide a venue for Buffalo’s many dance troupes and schools to perform bite-sized pieces of their work. Ten dance companies will give performances on the Lafayette Stage on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
As usual, the festival will bring a major focus to kid-friendly activities. The festival’s Kids Fest will include more than a dozen performances, including storytelling by Karima Amin and a show by veteran puppeteer Michele Costa. The Kids Fest culminates with a parade at 4 p.m. Sunday.
