The New Phoenix Theatre, at the edge of picturesque Johnson Park, has developed a reputation for producing haunting and innovative original theater. There was Franklin LaVoie’s thoroughly bizarre “Medium Rare” in 2005, a company-wide collaboration on “Gilgamesh” in 2007 and Richard Lambert’s modern musical ghost story “Fillmore” in 2011.
Now, the restless minds at the New Phoenix have dreamed up a new collaborative production called “Bounty: The Mutiny, as Recreated by Sailors on Pitcairn’s Island.” The show, co-written by its cast members and directed by Robert Waterhouse, is based on the infamous mutiny of the British merchant ship HMS Bounty west of Tahiti in 1789. It opens Friday and runs through Dec. 21.
The show, according to a release, “imagines the famous story retold by the mutiny’s survivors – and the dead.” Its cast of writers and actors include Christian Brandjes, Chris Kelly, Richard Lambert, Adam Yellen, Geoff Pictor, J.F.Kennedy, Zoe Appler, Alphonso Walker and Geoffrey Devereux. Michele Costa has provided puppets for the production.
Tickets are $15 to $25. Call 853-1334 or visit www.newphoenixtheatre.org.
