Let the holiday theater season begin.

The first entry in this year’s spate of local yuletide productions comes from Family Life Ministries, a faith-based theater company out of Bath, south of Rochester. The company will mount a dinner theater production of the musical “Gifts of the Magi,” which opens Friday and runs through Sunday in the Eastern Hills Wesleyan Church (8445 Greiner Road, Clarence).

The show is based on a short story by O. Henry about a poor young couple struggling through the holiday season. Out of equal measures of desperation and good will, he sells his prized pocket watch to buy her a comb, and she sells her flowing locks to buy him a chain for his watch. But as is the case in most such pieces of quasi-Dickensian holiday fare, things turn out for the best.

“There are glimpses of various city folk going about their holiday business, and the hilarious plight of a cheerful bum named Soapy, who wants only to get arrested so he can spend the night in a cozy cell,” according to a release. “The tuneful songs are neatly tied together by a newsboy-narrator, Willy, who adds his own melodious contribution and informative observations to the delightful proceedings!”

Doors open at 5:45 p.m. for the show, directed by Darren Litz and starring Robbie Lindmark and Ainslee Litz. Tickets are $32.50, including dinner. Call (800) 927-9083 or visit www.fln.org for more info.
