Cheektowaga joined other towns and villages in Erie County in declaring a state of emergency about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
And as if to drive the urgency home, Walden Galleria also closed its doors today, which is a rare event for the mall.
“The driving is impossible,” Supervisor Mary Holtz said.
No unnecessary travel, except by essential vehicles and traffic, is permitted in the town during the state of emergency, which will run until further notice.
Earlier in the morning, a drive around town showed it was not bad in the northern parts of the town.
“It is the temperature more than anything,” Holtz said.
But there have been white-outs throughout the day as wind blows across the open areas.
Garbage pickup was canceled in the town for Tuesday and Wednesday because of the cold weather. The normal schedule will return Thursday, and those who missed the pickup will have to wait until next week, Holtz said.
And police are hoping motorists heed the state of emergency and stay off the streets.
“We’ve had a lot of vehicles off in the ditch, stuck in snow banks,” Capt. James Speyer said.
Police also are asking those who are able, to clear the snow from sidewalks in front of their business or home as soon as possible.
“The other issue we have are sidewalks, where people are forced to walk in the street,” he said. “People are leaving their cars, it’s going to get worse.”
And the supervisor has the last word: “The streets are getting plowed. There’s white outs,” Holtz said. “It’s winter in Buffalo.”
