feast day: St. Maximilian Kolbe’s Feast Day will be celebrated with an educational presentation given by Dennis Castillo, dean of education at Christ the King Seminary and professor of church history, from 6 to 7 p.m. today in the dining room of Peregrine’s Landing, 575 Cayuga Creek Road, Cheektowaga. St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the Nazi German death camp of Auschwitz during World War II. Pope John Paul II declared him the “Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century.” Call 893-3000 to confirm attendance.

WORKSHOP: Parent Network of Western New York is offering a free workshop, “Skills for Effective Parent Advocacy – Bilingual,” from 10 to 11 a.m. today at the Belle Center, 104 Maryland St. It will help participants improve advocacy skills to effectively speak up for their child’s needs.
