Two dogs had a life and death struggle on the ice in the Town of Evans Thursday.

For one, it was a losing battle.

Town of Evans Police responded at 7:05 a.m. to a call that the two dogs were out on Lake Erie, 40 feet from shore. Because the ice wasn’t stable, an ice rescue team from the Lake Erie Beach Fire Company was summoned, arriving within minutes.

They were able to save the larger dog from the ice and water, but not the smaller dog, whose body was later retrieved from under the ice.

The surviving dog was taken to a local veterinarian, and treated for hypothermia.

Town of Evans police are warning people along the shores of Lake Erie to stay off the ice – and to keep their pets away, too. That’s particularly the case west of Sturgeon Point Marina, where ice is breaking up more rapidly.

The recent weather forecast of rain and high winds should make the lake even more dangerous in the days ahead, the police department warned.
